12 US Christmas Towns Worth Travelling For (2026 Dates)

Most "best Christmas towns" lists are written for families with small children, then handed to couples without anyone mentioning the swap. You arrive expecting a romantic evening and find a queue for Santa, a gingerbread decorating corner and a soft-play area.

Which US Christmas towns are best for couples?

Six are built for two: Nantucket (Christmas Stroll 4 to 6 December), Newport's Sparkling Lights at The Breakers ($45), Williamsburg's Grand Illumination (5, 12 and 19 December), Solvang's Julefest, St. Augustine's Nights of Lights (21 November to 18 January) and Bethlehem's Christkindlmarkt. Frankenmuth and Nashville's ICE! are aimed at families.

Some links in this post are affiliate links. If you book through them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

So this list is sorted honestly. Six of these are genuinely built for two people. Four are wonderful if you turn up on the right night and a disaster on the wrong one. And two are family destinations that we have included anyway, clearly labelled, because they are famous and you deserve to know what you would be walking into.

The twelve, sorted honestly

Built for two

1. Nantucket, Massachusetts

Boat moored in a calm harbour beside a row of waterfront houses in winter

An island thirty miles out to sea, out of season, with inns, restaurants and more than 150 lit Christmas trees down Main Street. You do not need a car. It is the best one on this list and it is not especially close.

One hour by fast catamaran from Hyannis

Dates. Nantucket Noel runs 1 November to 31 December 2026. The Christmas Stroll, the weekend everyone comes for, is 4–6 December 2026. The tree lighting is Friday 27 November at 4pm, with Main Street closed from noon to 6pm. Official site: nantucketchamber.org.

What actually happens. Over 150 trees lit along Main Street, carollers in Victorian costume, talking Christmas trees, a European-style Stroll Marketplace, and Santa arriving by boat at midday on the Saturday.

Getting there. High-speed catamaran from Hyannis takes about an hour, the car ferry about two and a half. There are year-round flights from Boston, Hyannis and Martha's Vineyard, plus seasonal services from JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, Westchester, Washington and Charlotte.

Book early, and we mean it. Island lodging is limited and Stroll weekend is the busiest of the winter. If you are reading this in October, book tonight. Compare Nantucket inns on Booking.com.

2. Newport, Rhode Island

Garlanded wooden staircase decorated for Christmas inside a grand house

The Breakers is a seventy-room Gilded Age summer house on a cliff, and at Christmas they decorate the inside and run a half-mile light trail through the grounds. Timed entry is between 4pm and 6pm, which conveniently leaves your evening free.

44 Ochre Point Avenue, Newport

Dates. Christmas at the Newport Mansions runs 21 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Sparkling Lights at The Breakers runs 21 November to 27 December 2026 on selected evenings only, so check your date. Official site: newportmansions.org.

Prices. $45 an adult for non-members, $30 for members, $18 for ages 6 to 12, free under 6. Tickets are non-refundable except when weather makes it unsafe.

What you get. A half-mile outdoor light trail with hundreds of thousands of lights and light installations, and the decorated interior of The Breakers on the same ticket. Entry slots run every thirty minutes from 4pm to 6pm; the house and grounds close at 8pm.

Also bookable. A behind-the-scenes holiday decorations tour on 10 and 17 December, 10am to 11am.

Couples verdict. The best effort-to-romance ratio here. One ticket, two hours, then dinner in town.

3. Williamsburg, Virginia

Fireworks bursting in a dark blue sky above a floodlit domed historic building

Eighteenth-century streets lit by candle, colonial taverns serving dinner, and fireworks fired from the Capitol and the Governor's Palace. There is almost nothing here aimed at modern children, which is exactly why it works.

Three Saturdays in December

Dates. Grand Illumination falls on 5, 12 and 19 December 2026, the first three Saturdays of the month. Official site: colonialwilliamsburg.org.

Check this before you drive. The official event page does not say whether Grand Illumination is free with managed access or needs a Colonial Williamsburg ticket. For reference, a single-day admission ticket is $37.50 for adults and $10 for ages 6 to 12; a three-day pass is $55. Call ahead on (888) 965-7254 rather than assuming either way.

On the night. Fireworks from two sites, concerts on several stages through the Historic Area streets, and the whole district decorated. Park at the Regional Visitor Center on Visitor Center Drive and take the shuttle in.

Couples verdict. One of the strongest here. Book a tavern dinner for the same evening and the night plans itself. Compare Williamsburg hotels on Booking.com.

4. Solvang, California

Red timber bell tower standing beside a whitewashed Scandinavian church

A Danish village in the Santa Ynez wine country that takes hygge seriously for six weeks. Wineries in the afternoon, a candlelit walking tour after dark.

Santa Ynez Valley, California wine country

Dates. Julefest runs 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. The tree lighting is Friday 4 December at 5.30pm in Solvang Park, with ballet and carols. The Julefest Parade is Saturday 5 December, 11am to 1.30pm. Official site: solvangusa.com.

Book this one. The "Hygge, Holiday & Hans Christian Andersen" candlelit evening walking tour. It is the most adult thing on any Christmas town itinerary we found.

Free and silly. The Nisse Adventure runs the whole season: Danish elves hidden around downtown, with a clue sheet from the Visitor Center. Also, Photos with Santa Paws on 12 December, 10am to noon, in Solvang Park, which is free and exactly what it sounds like.

Prices. Solvang does not publish Julefest ticket prices on its official page, so budget for the tours separately. Compare Solvang inns on Booking.com.

5. St. Augustine, Florida

Whitewashed Spanish colonial building with wooden balconies lit at night

Three million white lights over the oldest Spanish colonial town in the country, every night for two months, in a climate where you can walk around at night in a light jacket.

Nightly from late November to mid-January

Dates. Nights of Lights runs 21 November 2026 to 18 January 2027, lit every evening. Light-Up Night is 21 November, shortly after 6.30pm. Official site: visitstaugustine.com.

Where to stand. The Plaza de la Constitución for the big tree and bandstand, the Bridge of Lions footpath, and King Street where the Lightner Museum and Flagler College are lit. Boat tours run nightly too.

Parking tip. The downtown garage is $20 a day. There are three free park-and-ride lots with free buses to the visitor centre: Broudy's Lot on West King Street, North San Marco, and the county health department on San Sebastian View. Shuttle dates for this season had not been published when we checked.

Fair warning. The official site currently lists Light-Up Night as both 15 and 21 November in different places, and the Christmas parade as both the 5th and 6th of December. Confirm any single date against the event's own page.

6. Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Row of small-town storefronts lit in different colours along a street at night

A proper German-style Christkindlmarkt held at the foot of the old Bethlehem Steel blast furnaces. It is the strangest and best-looking setting of any Christmas market in America.

Ten minutes from Lehigh Valley airport; 75 minutes from Philadelphia

Dates. Open on selected days from 13 November to 20 December 2026: 13–15, 20–22 and 27–29 November, then 3–6, 10–13 and 17–20 December. Official site: artsquest.org.

The free window. Admission is free every Friday from 5pm to 8pm. Otherwise it is $14 all-in on Thursdays and Fridays, $16.50 on Saturdays and Sundays. Under-fives are free.

Getting there. Lehigh Valley International (ABE) is about a ten-minute drive. Philadelphia International is about 75 minutes. Local LANta buses are $2 cash one way.

Couples verdict. Go on a Friday evening, when it is free, and stay at the Hotel Bethlehem in the old town afterwards. Compare Bethlehem hotels on Booking.com.

Brilliant on the right night

7. New York City

Tall Christmas tree covered in lights standing between city buildings at night

Everybody's first idea, and it can be wonderful, as long as you skip the one night everyone else has pencilled in.

Skating is free at Bryant Park if you bring your own skates

Avoid 2 December. That is the Rockefeller Center tree lighting, and it is a crush. The tree itself arrives on the Plaza on 7 November and stands for weeks afterwards; go on a Tuesday instead.

Go here instead. The Winter Village at Bryant Park. The rink runs 28 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, 8am to 10pm, and stays open until midnight from 19 November to 3 January. Admission to the rink is free; skate hire runs from $18.72. Official site: bryantpark.org.

And then. The Holiday Shops run 28 October to 3 January. The Lodge, the open-air bar and food hall beside the ice, is open until 11.30pm through the holidays. The Union Square Holiday Market is listed as 12 November to 24 December.

For comparison. Skating at Rockefeller Center starts at $22 for a sixty-minute session, and the official photo in front of the tree starts at $50.

8. Chicago, Illinois

City skyline reflected in dark water on a cold clear night

Chicago runs three Christkindlmarkets and all of them are free. The trick is picking the right one, because they have completely different crowds.

Free admission at all three sites

Daley Plaza, in the Loop. 20 November to 24 December 2026, daily. Sunday to Thursday 11am to 8pm, Friday and Saturday to 9pm. This is the one to go to, on a weekday evening. Official site: christkindlmarket.com.

Wrigleyville. 20 November to 31 December at Gallagher Way, 28 vendors, closed on Christmas Day. Louder and younger.

Aurora. 20 November to 24 December at RiverEdge Park, Thursday to Sunday, with more than 60 vendors. The biggest of the three, and the most suburban.

Bring cash. The organisers say plainly that many vendors do not take cards.

Eat. Roasted nuts, fresh pretzels, bratwurst and spiced mulled wine, and a nutcracker display worth the detour.

9. Natchitoches, Louisiana

Red and gold festival lights reflected in rippling dark water at night

This is the hundredth Christmas Festival of Lights, in the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase, with the lights running along the Cane River. If you are going to go once, 2026 is the year.

An hour from Shreveport or Alexandria

Dates. The season runs 21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. "Turn on the Holidays" is 21 November with fireworks, live music and a drone show. The main festival day is 6 December. Official site: natchitocheschristmas.com.

Skip 6 December. That is the one day the whole state turns up. Any other evening of the season gives you the same 300,000 lights and over 100 set pieces along the river, with room to walk. There is live music and fireworks every Saturday.

Tickets. A wristband is $20, free for ages 6 and under. The festival is entirely cashless this year, with no cash accepted at ticket booths at all. The official site does not say whether the wristband covers the whole season or only festival days, so ask when you buy.

Getting there. Shreveport Regional is 72 miles, Alexandria-Esler 50, both roughly an hour. New Orleans is 240 miles and Dallas 260. Take exit 138 off I-49, then Highway 6 for about five miles.

10. McAdenville, North Carolina

House and surrounding trees covered in red and white Christmas lights at night

Half a mile of mill village around a lake, with more than 250 decorated trees and over half a million lights. It is completely free, and it is an evening rather than a weekend.

1 to 26 December, 5.30pm to 10pm, free

Dates. Christmas Town U.S.A. runs 1 to 26 December 2026, 5.30pm to 10pm every evening. The tree lighting is 1 December at 5.30pm at 102 Main Street. Official site: townofmcadenville.org.

The one to catch. The Yule Log Parade on 10 December, with carols from 5.30pm near the Yule Log on Main Street. The parade has run since 1949.

Walk it, don't drive it. You can do either, but the car queue is the whole experience for most visitors and walking is better. Go on a weeknight.

Set your expectations. This is a small village, not a destination: there is essentially nothing in the way of hotels or restaurants on site. Treat it as a night out from somewhere else, and you will love it.

Famous, but aimed at families

Both of these are genuinely impressive. Neither is a romantic weekend, and anyone telling you otherwise has not been.

11. Frankenmuth, Michigan

Rows of glass Christmas ornaments hanging on display in a shop

Bronner's CHRISTmas Wonderland is the size of five and a half football fields on a 27-acre site, open 361 days a year, selling more than 6,000 styles of ornament to over two million visitors a year. It is a genuinely astonishing building.

About 25 miles north of Flint, off I-75

Dates. Frankenmuth had published only one date when we checked: the Christmas Experience kickoff on 27 November 2026. The town says details are being added weekly, so check closer to the time. Official sites: frankenmuth.org and bronners.com.

Free bits. Parking is free, and the "World of Bronner's" film runs daily at no charge. Christmas Lane, the half-mile outdoor display, is lit every evening.

Getting there. Roughly 25 miles north of Flint, just off I-75, exit 136 northbound or 144 southbound. The address is 25 Christmas Lane.

Honest verdict. Bronner's and the Bavarian-themed main street are built for children. Go for the spectacle and the beer, not for a romantic evening.

12. Nashville, Tennessee

Carved ice sculpture of figures lit from within in blue and purple

Gaylord Opryland's ICE! is two million pounds of ice carved from 6,700 blocks, kept at 9°F, this year on a Home Alone theme. The resort hangs more than five million lights. It is a spectacle and it is loud.

6 November 2026 to 2 January 2027

Dates. The 43rd A Country Christmas runs 6 November 2026 to 2 January 2027. Official site: christmasatgaylordopryland.com.

Dress for it. ICE! is held at 9°F. There are two-storey ice slides, ice tubing, a skating rink and a Christmas circus show called POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance.

Prices. Gaylord does not publish a price list on its official pages; discounts are advertised for AAA members, military and teachers. ICE! ticket holders staying at the hotel get a skip-the-queue Chill Pass.

Honest verdict. ICE!, the slides and the Santa photos are a family day out. The glass-atrium resort itself, with its restaurants, bars and indoor gardens, does work for a couples weekend, as long as you go outside school holidays.

The free ones

Lit candles glowing in a dark window

McAdenville is the best value on the page. Over 250 decorated trees and more than half a million lights, free, every evening in December.

All three Chicago Christkindlmarkets are free, and the organisers say so in as many words.

Bethlehem is free every Friday evening from 5pm to 8pm, which turns a $33 evening for two into nothing.

Bryant Park's rink is free to enter if you bring your own skates and reserve a Bring Your Own Skates ticket. Hire is where the cost is.

Dates and prices come from official event sites and tourism boards, checked in October 2026, and reflect what those sources had published at the time. Several towns had not finished publishing their 2026 schedules, and we have said which. Always check the official site before booking travel.
