The thing nobody tells you about Christmas markets is that most of them are already packing up while you are still eating Christmas dinner. Cologne closes on the 23rd. Nuremberg stops serving at two in the afternoon on Christmas Eve. If you booked a trip for the week between Christmas and New Year expecting mulled wine and wooden chalets, you can arrive to an empty square.
Which European Christmas markets are still open after Christmas?
Vienna to 26 December, Colmar to 29 December, Budapest's Advent Bazilika to 1 January, Tivoli and Basel's Wienachtsdorf to 3 January, Prague and Tallinn to 6 January and Zagreb to 7 January. Cologne and Basel's main market close on 23 December; Nuremberg shuts at 2pm and Strasbourg at 6pm on Christmas Eve.
So this list is organised around the thing that actually decides your trip: when each market opens and when it shuts. Twelve markets, all of them good for two people, with the 2026 dates straight from each market's own site, what makes each one different, and a table at the bottom showing exactly which ones are still running after 24 December.
Pick your dates first, then your city
This is backwards from how most people plan, and it is the single thing that will save your trip. The German and French markets are tied to Advent and Christmas Eve. The Central European and Nordic ones run deep into January because they are built around Epiphany and New Year instead.
Travelling before 23 December? Everything on this list is open. You have the full choice.
Travelling between Christmas and New Year? Cologne, Basel's main market, Nuremberg and Strasbourg are all finished. Vienna, Colmar, Prague, Tallinn, Zagreb, Budapest and Copenhagen are still going.
Travelling in early January? Prague and Tallinn run to 6 January, Zagreb to 7 January. That is the whole list.

The classics
1. Vienna, Austria
The Wiener Christkindlmarkt spreads across Rathausplatz in front of the neo-gothic city hall, and it is the rare famous market that has actually thought about couples. The city's own tourism board points visitors towards the Herzerlbaum, the little hearts tree, which is exactly what it sounds like.
Opens 13 November, closes 26 December 2026
Dates. 13 November to 26 December 2026, daily 10am to 10pm, closing 6.30pm on Christmas Eve. Official site: christkindlmarkt.at.
Don't miss. The Eistraum, a skating path that winds through the illuminated Rathauspark. It runs 13 November to 6 January, eleven days longer than the market itself, and closes only on 31 December.
Also there. A twelve-metre multi-level carousel, and a separate children's Christmas world in the park with its own small ice rink.
Couples verdict. Top tier. The hearts tree and the skating path through a lit park are about as on-the-nose romantic as a public square gets, and it is one of only two markets here still open on Boxing Day.
Cost. Free entry. Vienna hotel rates in December are mid to premium. Compare Vienna hotels on Booking.com.
2. Strasbourg, France
The Christkindelsmärik has been running since 1570, which Strasbourg will tell you makes it the oldest in France. What matters more in practice is that it is not one market but eight-plus sites scattered across the old town, so the crowds have somewhere to spread out.
Opens 27 November 2026; closing date not yet confirmed
Dates. Opens Friday 27 November 2026, confirmed. The city has not yet published a 2026 closing date, but its own FAQ says chalets close at 6pm on 24 December, so plan on Christmas Eve. Chalets otherwise open 11.30am to 9pm. Official site: noel.strasbourg.eu.
Don't miss. The Petite France quarter site after dark, and the Grand Sapin on Place Kléber. The market proper is on Place Broglie.
Good to know. The cup deposit is €1, refundable at any chalet selling drinks. There are also collection points where you can drop the cup instead and the euro goes to a Strasbourg charity.
Couples verdict. Strong on atmosphere, but this is the busiest market on the list. Go midweek or you will spend the evening in a queue.
Cost. Free entry, mid-range city. Compare Strasbourg hotels on Booking.com.
3. Nuremberg, Germany
Up to 180 stalls under red-and-white striped cloth roofs, filling the Hauptmarkt. The market's own site calls it "the little city of wood and cloth," which is a better description than anything we could write.
Opens 27 November, closes 24 December 2026 at 2pm
Dates. 27 November to 24 December 2026, daily 10am to 9pm. On Christmas Eve it closes at 2pm, which catches people out every year. Official site: christkindlesmarkt.de.
Don't miss. The Prolog: the Christkind opens the market from the gallery of the Frauenkirche at 5.30pm on Friday 27 November. The role is held for two years at a time by a young woman chosen by jury; the current Christkind is Nora Falk.
Eat and buy. Nuremberg Rostbratwurst, grilled over open fire and, in the market's own words, "only as long as your finger." For a souvenir, the Zwetschgenmännle, little figures made from prunes and figs.
Couples verdict. Honestly, moderate. It is the most famous market in the world and it feels like it. Compact, packed and better as a daytime pilgrimage than an evening for two.
Cost. Free entry, and the cheapest of the big German names. Compare Nuremberg hotels on Booking.com.
4. Cologne, Germany
Over 140 stalls at the literal foot of the cathedral, on Roncalliplatz, under a 25-metre fir lit by roughly fifty thousand LEDs. No market on this list has a better backdrop.
Opens 16 November, closes 23 December 2026
Dates. 16 November to 23 December 2026. Note both ends: it is the earliest opener here, and it finishes on the 23rd, not Christmas Eve. Sunday to Wednesday 11am to 9pm, Thursday and Friday to 10pm, Saturday 10am to 10pm. Official site: koelnerweihnachtsmarkt.com.
The trap. The market is closed on Sunday 22 November 2026 for Totensonntag, the German day of remembrance. Since it opens on the 16th, an early-season weekend can land you on a shut market.
Couples verdict. Moderate. The cathedral is unbeatable and the market is loud, dense and firmly big-city. Good for one memorable evening, less good as the centre of a romantic weekend.
Cost. Free entry, mid-range. Compare Cologne hotels on Booking.com.
Central Europe, and open longest
5. Prague, Czech Republic
Old Town Square does the heavy lifting here, and the market runs well past New Year, which makes Prague one of the few places on this list that works for a trip between Christmas and Epiphany.
Roughly 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 — worth reconfirming
Dates. The Czech national tourism board lists Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square as 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Be aware that the same official page also quotes a 20 November season start elsewhere on it, and advises confirming before you travel. We would re-check in late November. Listing: visitczechia.com.
Nice detail. The tree on Old Town Square is chosen from a different region of the country each year.
Eat and drink. Trdelník, mulled wine, roast ham, and medovina, hot honey mead. There are live craft demonstrations too, including sword making.
Couples verdict. Strong. Very walkable, open through 6 January, and the square does most of the work for you.
Cost. The best value of all the big-name markets here. Compare Prague hotels on Booking.com.
6. Budapest, Hungary
Budapest runs two separate markets. The one in front of St Stephen's Basilica is the one we can give you firm dates for, and it is the better of the two for an evening walk.
Basilica market: 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027
Dates. Advent Bazilika, on Szent István tér, runs 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027 with close to a hundred Hungarian makers and food stalls. Official site: adventbazilika.hu.
The other one. The Vörösmarty Square market has not published 2026 dates anywhere we could reach. It usually runs from mid-to-late November into the New Year, but do not book around a specific date for it.
Couples verdict. Good value rather than great romance. Budapest's real case for a couples trip is the thermal baths and the river at night, with the market as a pleasant add-on rather than the reason you came.
Cost. Budget. The cheapest city on this list for food and hotels. Compare Budapest hotels on Booking.com.
7. Tallinn, Estonia
The smallest and most intimate square on this list, ringed by medieval merchant houses, with the market filling it almost completely. If your idea of a Christmas market trip is a walled old town and about four hours of daylight, this is the one.
Opens 20 November 2026, closes 6 January 2027
Dates. 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 on Town Hall Square. Official site: visittallinn.ee.
Time it right. The tree goes up in mid-November but the lights are switched on at the start of Advent, which in 2026 falls on opening day. Arrive for that evening if you can.
Couples verdict. Very strong on atmosphere, and the least crowded of the famous markets. The catch is that it does not pair with anything else by train, so treat it as a dedicated trip.
Cost. Budget. Compare Tallinn hotels on Booking.com.
8. Zagreb, Croatia
Advent in Zagreb is the one most people on this list have not done, and it runs longer than any of them. The markets spread through the Upper Town, Zrinjevac Park, King Tomislav Square and, best of all, a pedestrian tunnel underneath the old town.
Opens 28 November 2026, closes 7 January 2027
Dates. 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027. The full 2026 venue list was not published when we checked. Official site: adventzagreb.hr.
Don't miss. The Grič tunnel, a lit pedestrian tunnel running under the Upper Town, which is the single most unusual market venue on this page. There is an ice rink on King Tomislav Square too.
Eat this. Fritule, small fried yeast-dough balls, sold everywhere.
Couples verdict. Underrated and compact. The catch is rail connections, which are poor; fly in rather than trying to build a two-city trip around it.
Cost. Budget. Compare Zagreb hotels on Booking.com.
Small, pretty and worth the detour
9. Colmar, France
If you only take one recommendation off this page, take this one. Colmar runs six separate markets within a few hundred metres of each other, in an Alsatian old town small enough to cross on foot in fifteen minutes, and it stays open to 29 December.
Opens 23 November, closes 29 December 2026
Dates. 23 November to 29 December 2026, six markets. Official site: noel-colmar.com.
Don't miss. Children singing Christmas songs from boats on the canals, Father Christmas's giant letterbox, and the Christmas cellars. There is a Ferris wheel too.
Use it as a base. The Alsace villages run their own markets, and several are weekends-only, which most guides get wrong. For 2026: Eguisheim and Turckheim 27 November to 30 December; Riquewihr 27 November to 20 December; Ribeauvillé's medieval market on 5–6 and 12–13 December only; Kaysersberg and Bergheim weekends only.
Couples verdict. The best two-to-three-night trip on this list. Walkable, canal-side, open late into December, and you can do a different village each day.
Cost. Free entry, mid-range. Compare Colmar hotels on Booking.com.
10. Bruges, Belgium
The most straightforwardly romantic city on this page, where the market is almost beside the point. Bruges wraps the whole season into a festival called Winter Glow, which runs far longer than the markets inside it.
Winter Glow 20 November 2026 to 14 February 2027; market dates not yet published
Dates, carefully. The Winter Glow festival runs 20 November 2026 to 14 February 2027. The Christmas markets inside it are a shorter season and Bruges has not published their 2026 dates; expect roughly late November to early January. Do not plan a market trip around the February festival end date. Official site: visitbruges.be.
New this year. The ice rink is covered and has moved to Koning Albert I-park, which is the first time it has been set up there, so older guides will send you to the wrong place. The IJsgloed winter bar overlooks it.
If your dates fit. The Handmade in Brugge makers' market runs 18–20 December at the City Halls.
Couples verdict. Top tier for atmosphere. Go for the city, treat the market as a bonus, and book early.
Cost. Mid to premium. December hotel rates in Bruges are among the highest here. Compare Bruges hotels on Booking.com.
11. Basel, Switzerland
Around 150 wooden chalets across two squares, and the one market here with a tradition that only works if there are two of you.
Main market 26 November to 23 December 2026; the Wienachtsdorf runs to 3 January
Dates, and this matters. Basel runs two. The main market on Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz is 26 November to 23 December 2026, daily 11am to 8.30pm. The Basler Wienachtsdorf on Theaterplatz runs 26 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Arrive after Christmas and only the Wienachtsdorf is still there. Official site: basel.com.
Book this. The Martinsturm staircase at the Münster is lit on weekday evenings, 4pm to 6pm, last entry 5.30pm, CHF 6 — and you have to go up in a group of two or more. A climb that officially requires a companion is a rare thing.
Don't miss. The thirteen-metre Christmas pyramid on Barfüsserplatz, which is where everyone meets for mulled wine, the Münsterplatz tree decorated by Johann Wanner, and the public wish book in the Rathaus courtyard.
Couples verdict. Excellent and genuinely distinctive, as long as you know which of the two markets is open on your dates.
Cost. Premium, by a wide margin. This is Switzerland in December. Compare Basel hotels on Booking.com.
12. Copenhagen, Denmark
Worth saying plainly: Christmas at Tivoli is a ticketed amusement park dressed for the season, not a street market. That is not a criticism. It is the most designed, most consistently beautiful evening on this list, and the only one you can plan a New Year's Eve around.
13 November to 3 January — confirm the year before booking
Dates. Tivoli publishes its Christmas season as 13 November to 3 January but does not print the year on either of its season pages, so reconfirm before you book flights. Official site: tivoli.dk.
What you get. More than 70,000 Christmas decorations, an ice rink, and every ride open. Fireworks at midnight on New Year's Eve.
Couples verdict. Top tier for a single planned evening, and the obvious choice if you want to be somewhere beautiful at midnight on 31 December.
Cost. Premium, and the only entry on this list that charges admission. Tivoli sells an entrance-plus-rides pass and an annual Tivoli Pass; check current prices on their site. Compare Copenhagen hotels on Booking.com.

Two cities, one weekend
Strasbourg and Colmar. Twenty-seven minutes apart at the fastest, with 44 trains a day. This is barely a journey. Their dates overlap from 27 November, and Colmar keeps going for five days after Strasbourg has packed up.
Basel, Strasbourg and Colmar. Basel to Strasbourg is about an hour and a quarter, then the 27-minute hop to Colmar. Three markets in three countries on one rail line, with dates overlapping 27 November to 23 December.
Vienna and Budapest. About two hours forty by Railjet, and both open from 13 November. Vienna runs to 26 December, Budapest's basilica market to 1 January.
What not to do. Nuremberg to Prague looks close on a map and is not: the German rail operator shows no direct connection and a fastest route of about four hours forty with two changes. Vienna to Prague is around four hours fifteen, which is fine as part of a longer trip but a waste of a weekend.
Three things worth knowing before you go
The mug is not free, and that is on purpose. Most markets charge a deposit on the mulled wine cup, refunded when you hand it back. Strasbourg's is €1 and you can donate it to a local charity instead of reclaiming it. Other markets rarely publish the amount, so carry small change.
Weekday late mornings are the quiet window. Most markets open between 10 and 11.30am, and the hour after opening on a Tuesday is a different place from the same square on Saturday night. If you want photographs without a crowd, that is when.
Check the date, then check it again in November. Several of these markets had not published full 2026 details when we wrote this. Prague's official listing contradicts itself, Strasbourg has published an opening date but not a closing one, Bruges has not published market dates at all, and Tivoli has not printed the year. We have flagged each one above.
All dates and details were taken from each market's official site or city tourism board in October 2026, and reflect what those sources had published at the time. Markets change their dates. Always check the official site before booking travel.
