15 Nature Getaways for Couples (All Doable in a Weekend)

There is a specific kind of tired that only nature fixes. Not the tired that a spa weekend solves, but the one where you have been looking at screens for three months and your brain has forgotten what a horizon looks like.

Which nature getaways work for a couple's weekend?

Fifteen that fit three days and sit within a few hours of a major city: Mohonk and the Berkshires near New York, Acadia near Boston, Blue Ridge 90 minutes from Atlanta ($450 to $900 for two), Hocking Hills an hour from Columbus, Big Sur three hours from San Francisco and Zion 2.5 hours from Las Vegas.

These fifteen getaways all treat nature as the main event. Every one works as a three-day trip, and most sit within a few hours of a major city. Cabins, lodges, canyons, coastline, and a few places where your phone simply stops working, which turns out to be the point.

Best season. July through September, when the rain finally lets up.

Weekend budget for two. $600 to $1,100.

Three things that make nature weekends work

Book the stay before the trip. Cabins and park lodges sell out months ahead in season, unlike city hotels. This is the one thing worth planning early.

Check permits and road status. Several parks now use timed entry, some trails need lottery permits, and mountain roads close seasonally. Ten minutes on the park website saves a ruined Saturday.

Download maps before you lose signal. Half the places on this list have no service, which is the appeal, right up until you need directions.

Prices are rough estimates for two people, covering lodging, food, and fuel, and were accurate as of October 2026. Always check current rates before booking.

Questions couples ask

What is the cheapest nature getaway for couples?

Hocking Hills, Ohio and Starved Rock, Illinois, both $400 to $800 for two over three days, and Blue Ridge, Georgia at $450 to $900. All three have cabins, many with hot tubs, under two hours from Columbus, Chicago and Atlanta respectively.

Which national parks need reservations?

Acadia requires vehicle reservations in season, Arches uses timed entry in peak season, Rocky Mountain National Park (Estes Park) uses timed-entry permits, and Zion's Angels Landing needs a lottery permit. Book these before you book lodging.

When is the best time for a nature weekend?

October for colour in the Berkshires, Mohonk, the Smokies, Blue Ridge and Hocking Hills; April or October for Moab and Zion, since summer heat is dangerous; September for Acadia and Big Sur; late September for the elk rut at Estes Park; spring for the strongest waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge.

Which nature getaway is best in winter?

Starved Rock for frozen waterfalls in January, Lake Placid for snow in February and Mohonk Mountain House for its skating pavilion. The Olympic Peninsula lodges close seasonally, so save that one for July to September.

Do you need a car for these nature getaways?

Yes for most, but Mohonk (90 minutes from New York) and Zion, where Springdale is walkable to the park gate and a seasonal canyon shuttle runs, need the car least once you arrive. Download offline maps; many of these places have no phone signal.
