12 Romantic Winter Getaways in the US: Snow, Springs, Sun

Winter travel splits couples into two camps. One of you wants snow, a fireplace and nowhere to be. The other wants to feel the sun again. This list covers both, plus the thing that quietly beats either: sitting in water hot enough to steam while it snows on your head.

What are the most romantic winter getaways in the US?

Woodstock, Vermont for snow and a fire (Wassail Weekend 11 to 13 December 2026); Yellowstone's Old Faithful Snow Lodge for something nobody else is doing; Hot Springs, Arkansas for the cheapest special weekend; Santa Fe on Christmas Eve for the Farolito Walk; and Key West, with 77.7°F December highs, if you want winter to go away.

Some links in this post are affiliate links. If you book through them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Twelve places, none of them repeated from our other guides, with the 2026 and 2027 dates that actually matter, the roads that close, and what each one costs where we could verify a real price.

Lights of a small village scattered across a snowy valley at night

Decide which kind of cold you want

Small mountain town glowing at dusk below snow-covered slopes and pine forest

You want snow and a fire. Telluride, Woodstock, Bend, Yellowstone. Expect seasonal road closures and chain requirements; book lodging first, everything else second.

You want to be in hot water. Glenwood Springs and Hot Springs. The cheapest genuinely memorable winter weekend on this page, and the one that works whether or not it snows.

You want sun on your face by lunchtime. Santa Fe, Sedona, Palm Springs. High desert in winter is cold at night and warm at midday, which is a better combination than it sounds.

You want winter to be somebody else's problem. Carmel, Charleston, Key West. Key West averages a 77°F high in December.

The twelve at a glance

Snow and mountains

1. Telluride, Colorado

Two gondola cabins crossing above snow-covered mountain peaks under a blue sky

A box canyon town with a free gondola running over the ridge to Mountain Village until midnight, every night, all winter. That is the whole pitch and it is a good one: you can have dinner on one side of a mountain and sleep on the other without touching a car.

Ten minutes from Telluride Regional Airport; six hours from Denver

The gondola. Free to everyone, running 6.30am to midnight seven days a week. The 2026–27 winter season is 20 November 2026 to 4 April 2027. It shuts for maintenance 26 October to 19 November, so do not book the first half of November. Official site: telluride.com.

Getting there. Telluride Regional (TEX) is about ten minutes out. Montrose is 65 miles, around an hour and a quarter. Denver is 331 miles, about six hours.

Book your ride in advance. The tourism board states plainly that there is no Uber or on-demand car service from either airport. Pre-book a shuttle or a rental or you will be stuck.

Couples verdict. Strong, and for a concrete reason rather than a vague one: a free lift between two villages, running to midnight, is a romantic mechanic you cannot get anywhere else on this list.

Note. Telluride Ski Resort had not published its 2026–27 opening and closing dates when we checked, so check before you book flights around skiing specifically. Compare Telluride lodging on Booking.com.

2. Woodstock, Vermont

Red covered bridge over a stream surrounded by deep snow and bare trees

The New England village that looks the way people who have never been to New England imagine New England. In December it also runs one of the oldest-feeling traditions in the country.

16 miles from Lebanon, New Hampshire airport; 143 miles from Boston

Time it for this. Wassail Weekend runs 11–13 December 2026, 10am to 4pm, at Billings Farm & Museum. Orchard wassailing, which means singing to the apple trees and sharing bread and cider with them, plus candle dipping, butter making, outdoor fire pits with cocoa and hot spiced cider. Horse-drawn sleigh or wagon rides run on select days, weather permitting. Buy tickets online to skip the queue.

Where to stay. The Woodstock Inn, whose spa is Forbes four-star rated, LEED certified and has ten treatment rooms. The inn also runs a Nordic centre for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with a conditions page worth checking the morning you go.

Don't plan around this. The Carriage Barn visitor centre at Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park is open Memorial Day weekend to 31 October. In winter it is shut.

Couples verdict. The most completely documented romantic weekend here. A four-star spa and a candlelit December tradition in the same village is not a combination you have to work at.

More. Town tourism site: woodstockvt.com.

3. Bend, Oregon

Snow-capped volcano reflected in a still lake ringed by evergreen forest

High desert on one side, volcano on the other, and a town in between that takes its breweries seriously. The scenic byway out of town literally ends in a wall of snow, which is more fun than it sounds.

Twenty minutes from Redmond airport; three and a half hours from Portland

Dates. Mt. Bachelor's 2026–27 opening day is scheduled for 4 December 2026. The closing date has not been published. Official town site: visitbend.com.

Do this. Drive the Cascade Lakes Highway as far as it goes. In winter it is gated from Lava Lake to the Dutchman Flat snow park near Mt. Bachelor, so the road simply stops and the snowshoe trails begin. The county aims to reopen it before Memorial Day, targeting early May.

Driving warning. Visit Bend's own advice: chains may be required when there is snow on the passes. Check TripCheck before you leave, keep the tank topped up, and carry water and warm layers.

Couples verdict. Honest assessment: Bend is an activity town rather than a romance town. Come for the day on the mountain and the evening in the Old Mill District, not for a candlelit weekend.

Getting there. Redmond (RDM) is 17 miles. Portland is about 160 miles, three and a half hours. Eugene is about 130. Compare Bend lodging on Booking.com.

4. Yellowstone in winter, Wyoming

Bison standing in deep snow with frost on its coat

In winter the interior roads close to cars and the Old Faithful Snow Lodge becomes reachable only by snowcoach. There is no television and no radio in any room. If you have ever wanted to be genuinely unreachable together for three days, this is the trip.

Four hours fifteen by snowcoach from Mammoth Hot Springs

Dates. Old Faithful Snow Lodge's winter season is 16 December 2026 to 7 March 2027. Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel closes 8 March 2027 and reopens 23 April. Official site: yellowstonenationalparklodges.com.

How you get in. Snowcoaches run daily between Mammoth and Old Faithful, leaving at 7.45am or 1.45pm, taking about four hours fifteen each way. Reservations are required in both directions. You cannot book a snowcoach on the same day as the winter airport shuttle, so plan a night at Mammoth first.

What it costs to get there. Snowcoach fares are $179.45 one way to Old Faithful and $182.90 coming back, taxes and fees included. That is $724.70 for two, round trip, before you have paid for a room.

At the lodge. An outdoor skating rink just outside the lobby with free skate rentals, a ski shop renting cross-country skis and snowshoes, trails leaving from the door, and a lounge with a fireplace.

Pack for this. Your luggage travels on a separate vehicle. Keep medication and anything you will need that day in a lap-sized bag, and check in fifteen minutes before departure.

Couples verdict. The single most distinctive trip on this page. Booking it is harder than booking anything else here, and that is rather the point.

Hot springs

5. Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Steam rising off a natural hot spring pool surrounded by snow and rock

Two large soaking complexes in one small Colorado town, both open late, and an Amtrak station in the middle of it so you do not have to drive a mountain pass in January at all.

180 miles from Denver, or step off the California Zephyr downtown

Arrive by train. Amtrak's California Zephyr stops in downtown Glenwood Springs, and the depot is within walking distance of lodging and the pools. For a winter trip this is the best argument on the page. Tourism site: visitglenwood.com.

Glenwood Hot Springs Resort. Open year-round, rain or shine, 9am to 9pm. Day passes run roughly $38 to $60 per adult depending on the season, so about $76 to $120 for two. Note one closure: the pools shut on Tuesday 17 November 2026 for scheduled maintenance.

Iron Mountain Hot Springs. Thirty-five pools ranging from 89°F to 108°F, open 9am to 10pm daily, at 281 Centennial Street. Different character from the big resort pool, and the later closing time is useful.

Also here. The Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves, natural steam caves, if you want something stranger than a swimming pool.

Couples verdict. Reliable rather than romantic, but reliability in January is worth a lot. Two soaking complexes open past 9pm means the evening plans itself. Compare Glenwood Springs lodging on Booking.com.

6. Hot Springs, Arkansas

Columned indoor thermal bathing pool with steam on the water

An entire national park built around a row of early twentieth-century bathhouses, in a town where December averages 53°F. It is the cheapest genuinely special winter weekend on this list and almost nobody thinks of it.

About an hour from Little Rock

The water. It surfaces at 143°F. Two bathhouses on Bathhouse Row still use it: Buckstaff, which has operated continuously since 1912 and does the traditional bath, ages 10 and up; and Quapaw, which runs Roman-style open thermal pools plus private baths, massages and facials, ages 14 and up. Park site: nps.gov/hosp.

Free, and worth doing. Fill a bottle at the thermal jug fountains: the Noble Fountain on Reserve Street, the Shell Fountain on the Stevens Balustrade, and the Dripping Spring between the Hale and Maurice bathhouses.

In December. Garvan Woodland Gardens, the botanical garden of the University of Arkansas, runs Holiday Lights from 21 November to 31 December. General garden admission is $22 an adult; the lights are ticketed separately and the price is not published, so call ahead.

Winter temperatures. December averages 53°F by day and 33°F at night, January 49°F and 28°F, February 52°F and 32°F.

Couples verdict. Underrated and genuinely romantic in an old-fashioned way. Book Buckstaff for the ritual and Quapaw for the comfort; the bath prices are given by phone rather than online. Town site: hotsprings.org.

High desert

7. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Paper bag lanterns with candles inside glowing along a low wall at dusk

On Christmas Eve the city closes Canyon Road to cars and thousands of small candles in paper bags are set along the adobe walls. You walk the whole street in the dark with everybody else. It is free, and it is the best winter evening on this page.

An hour from Albuquerque, or twenty minutes from Santa Fe Regional

The Farolito Walk. An annual Christmas Eve tradition on Canyon Road. Police close the road and nearby streets from about 5pm, the walk runs from sunset until roughly 9pm, and free shuttles run from the South Capitol Rail Runner station. Those timings come from past years; the city had not published 2026 details when we checked, so confirm in December.

Getting there without a car. The Rail Runner Express commuter train links Albuquerque and Santa Fe every day, with a connector bus into town. Albuquerque's airport is about a sixty-minute drive; Santa Fe Regional is twenty minutes from downtown.

If you want snow too. Ski Santa Fe is about 16 miles from the Plaza with 1,725 feet of vertical, open November through April. Specific 2026–27 dates were not published.

Couples verdict. Top of the list for a single unforgettable night, provided you can travel on 24 December. Book accommodation early; everyone else has had this idea.

Official site. santafe.org. Compare Santa Fe lodging on Booking.com.

8. Sedona, Arizona

Red rock buttes dusted with snow under low cloud

Red rock with snow on it is a thing worth seeing once, and winter is the only season you can hike Sedona at midday without suffering. It is also the quiet season, which in Sedona is a significant upgrade.

113 miles from Phoenix, about two hours

The one to time. The Festival of Lights at Tlaquepaque, now in its fifth decade, lights 6,000 luminarias at 5pm when the bell tower tolls. It runs 3pm to 8pm and admission is free. The 2026 date had not been published when we checked, so watch the Visit Sedona calendar from late November.

Use the free shuttle. The Sedona Shuttle runs to the Dry Creek Vista, Soldier Pass and Cathedral Rock trailheads from three park-and-ride lots at Posse Grounds, North SR-179 and West SR-89A. Check operating days before you rely on it; the winter schedule is not published.

Before you park anywhere else. A Red Rock Pass is required at many Coconino National Forest recreation sites around Sedona.

Couples verdict. Lovely, and one genuinely romantic free ritual, but the tourism bureau offers nothing else aimed at couples. Build the trip around the light and the quiet rather than around an itinerary.

Getting there. Phoenix is 113 miles, about two hours. Las Vegas is 278 miles, about five. Official site: visitsedona.com.

Where winter isn't

9. Palm Springs, California

Palm-lined street with low mid-century buildings and bare desert mountains behind

Two hours from Los Angeles, and the only place here where you can be in a desert valley at lunchtime and at 8,516 feet by dinner.

107 miles from Los Angeles; the airport is minutes from the centre

Book the tram, then dinner. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway climbs two and a half miles up Chino Canyon in about ten minutes to a station at 8,516 feet, with a state park visitor centre and more than fifty miles of trails at the top. Tickets are $36.95 an adult online; the Ride 'n' Dine ticket at $45 adds dinner at the Pines Café and is available after 4pm. Two Ride 'n' Dine tickets come to $90.

Free and worth planning around. The Festival of Lights Parade is on Saturday 5 December 2026, stepping off promptly at 5.45pm and running about a mile and a half north along Palm Canyon Drive from Ramon Road to Tachevah Drive. The last float passes around 8pm. No tickets needed.

Also running all winter. VillageFest, the weekly street fair, runs 15 October 2026 to 27 May 2027. Tour de Palm Springs is on 6 February 2027.

Couples verdict. Strong, and unusually easy to plan: a packaged evening for two at 8,500 feet with a published price takes the decision-making out of it.

Getting there. Los Angeles is about 107 miles, two to two and a half hours. San Diego is about 123. Official site: visitpalmsprings.com.

10. Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

Windswept cypress tree silhouetted against low sun on a coastal bluff

A town you can walk across in five minutes, where the dogs are allowed in the restaurants and the gray whales go past offshore in December and January. Monterey's own airport describes Carmel as a romantic destination for adults, which is a strange thing for an airport to say and also correct.

Seven miles from Monterey Regional Airport

The winter-only reason to come. Gray whales pass California in December and January on their southbound migration to Mexico, a round trip of about ten thousand miles.

Do this. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is three miles south on Highway 1. Day use is 8am to 7pm with last entry at 6.30pm, $10 a vehicle. Nobody is admitted after 6.30pm, so time the afternoon properly.

December dates. Visit Carmel lists Holidays in the Park, with the tree and menorah lighting, on 4 December, and the Inns of Distinction Tour on 6 December. The Art Walk runs 12 December, 9 January and 13 February. The calendar does not print years, so confirm before booking.

If you plan around February. The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am runs 1–7 February 2027 at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill. Lovely to watch, terrible for hotel availability.

Couples verdict. The best-credentialed coastal pick here, and the only one where a third party rather than the tourism board calls it romantic. Official site: carmelcalifornia.com. Compare Carmel lodging on Booking.com.

11. Charleston, South Carolina

Row of pastel-coloured townhouses on a city street with a horse-drawn carriage passing

Charleston in winter averages between 47 and 52°F, which means you can walk the whole historic peninsula in a coat without ever being too hot or too cold. In July you cannot do that at all.

Twelve miles from Charleston International Airport

Why winter specifically. The visitors bureau describes winters as typically mild, averaging 47°F to 52°F, with periods of rain and a chance of flurries in late December or early January. Low season means the restaurants that are impossible in spring are merely difficult.

One dated event worth building around. The Lowcountry Oyster Festival, now in its forty-second year, is on Sunday 28 February 2027 at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant.

Every month. Revolution Saturdays at Middleton Place run on the second Saturday, with Revolutionary-era programming in the stableyards.

Couples verdict. A lovely place rather than a place with a romantic credential. The bureau links holiday itineraries but publishes no dates for them, so plan around the food and the walking rather than an event.

Official site. charlestoncvb.com. Worth verifying any individual listing against the event's own page; the bureau's calendar has some evidently mangled date ranges on it.

12. Key West, Florida

Pastel clapboard houses with balconies behind a white wall and palm trees

The warmest answer on this page, with the numbers to prove it: December averages a high of 77.7°F, January 75.8°F, February 77.4°F. Old Town is walkable and bikeable, and the island runs a car-free programme, so you can leave the rental behind.

Mile marker zero, at the end of 113 miles and 42 bridges

Every single evening. The Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square, billed as Key West's longest-running arts festival. Crowds start gathering about an hour before sunset. No booking, no planning, just turn up.

If you come in January. The Key West Literary Seminar runs 7–10 January 2027, its forty-fourth, on the theme of poetry. Four days, and a genuinely good excuse for a winter week on the island.

Getting there. Key West International (EYW) is served by Allegiant, American, Breeze, Delta, JetBlue and United. Or take the Key West Express ferry, which docks at the Bight terminal within walking distance of Old Town. Driving, the Overseas Highway runs 113 miles across 42 bridges from Florida City; mile markers count down from 127 to zero, and Key West is the last four.

Warning. January is peak season and the Overseas Highway backs up at peak travel times. Allow extra, and consider parking at the Old Town garage and using the park-and-ride.

Couples verdict. Reliably warm, reliably walkable, and the only place here where the evening plan is simply "watch the sun go down with everyone else." Official site: visitfloridakeys.com.

Three things that make winter trips work

Wood-panelled cabin interior with a lit wood stove and string lights

Check what closes, not just what opens. Telluride's gondola shuts for three weeks in November. Bend's scenic highway is gated all winter. Woodstock's park visitor centre closes at the end of October. Glenwood's pools close for a single day on 17 November 2026. Ten minutes of checking is the difference between a good weekend and a wasted drive.

Where there is a train, take the train. Glenwood Springs and Santa Fe are both reachable by rail, and neither mountain pass in January is anything you want to drive. The Zephyr stops a short walk from the hot springs.

Book the thing with a fixed date first. Wassail Weekend, the Farolito Walk and the Pebble Beach Pro-Am all move hotel prices in their towns. Lock the room before you think about anything else.

All dates, prices and distances were taken from official tourism boards, the National Park Service or the operators themselves in October 2026, and reflect what those sources had published at the time. Where a 2026 or 2027 date had not yet been released, we have said so. Always check the official site before booking travel.

Questions couples ask

What is the cheapest romantic winter weekend in the US?

Hot Springs, Arkansas. Thermal bathhouses on Bathhouse Row, free hot water at the Noble and Shell fountains, Garvan Gardens holiday lights (21 November to 31 December, $22 garden admission) and December highs around 53°F, an hour from Little Rock.

How do you get to Old Faithful in winter?

By snowcoach from Mammoth Hot Springs, daily at 7:45am or 1:45pm, about 4 hours 15 minutes each way. $179.45 out and $182.90 back per person, so $724.70 for two before lodging. The Snow Lodge runs 16 December 2026 to 7 March 2027; book both directions.

Which winter getaways can you reach by train?

Glenwood Springs, Colorado, where Amtrak's California Zephyr stops downtown within walking distance of the hot springs, and Santa Fe, via the Rail Runner Express from Albuquerque. If there is a rail option, take it rather than driving mountain passes in January.

Where is warm in the US in December?

Key West: December highs average 77.7°F and January 75.8°F. Palm Springs and Charleston are milder options, and Carmel-by-the-Sea has gray whales passing in December and January. Santa Fe and Sedona are sunny by lunchtime but cold at night.

When is Wassail Weekend in Woodstock, Vermont?

11 to 13 December 2026, 10am to 4pm at Billings Farm & Museum, with wassailing, candle dipping and sleigh rides weather permitting. Stay at the Woodstock Inn, which runs a Nordic centre and a Forbes four-star spa. Book early; the weekend lifts hotel prices.
