10 Winter Chalet Getaways for Couples (No Flights Needed)

There is a specific winter fantasy almost every couple shares. Fresh snow outside, a fire going, a hot tub you stay in far too long, and a day with nothing on it but the two of you and whatever you are watching that night.

Where can couples find a winter chalet weekend without flying?

Big Bear Lake (two hours from Los Angeles, A-frames with a wood stove and hot tub, $450 to $900 for two), Stowe (3.5 hours from Boston), Mohonk Mountain House (90 minutes from New York, all-inclusive), Breckenridge (90 minutes from Denver) and Leavenworth (2.5 hours from Seattle). Mid-January and early March are the sweet spots.

It does not take the Alps, and it does not take a week. These ten chalet and lodge getaways all work as three-day winter weekends, and every one is a drive rather than a flight. Some are ski towns, some are deliberately not.

What makes a winter weekend work

Book far earlier than you think. Winter chalets are the tightest inventory in travel. Holiday weeks and February school breaks sell out months ahead, and prices on those dates can run double a normal weekend. Mid-January and early March are the sweet spots: full snow, half the crowd.

Decide whether you are actually skiing. A lift ticket plus rentals can add $300 or more per person to a weekend. Half the places below are just as good if you never leave the property, which is worth knowing before you book a resort town.

Check the drive, not just the distance. Mountain passes close in storms. If your route crosses one, look at the state's road conditions page the morning you leave, and keep the trip flexible enough to leave a few hours early.

The ten at a glance

East

1. Stowe, Vermont

Snowy mountain village with a church steeple at dusk

The classic New England ski village: covered bridges under snow, a white steeple, and mountains that hold powder into April.

About three and a half hours from Boston, five from New York

Where to stay. Trapp Family Lodge, an Austrian-style lodge on 2,600 acres run by the von Trapp family, with its own cross-country trail network and a brewery on site. It is the closest thing to an alpine chalet in the Northeast.

Do this. Cross-country ski the lodge trails in the morning, then the outdoor fire pit and a beer in the afternoon. No lift ticket required.

Best timing. January and February for reliable snow. Avoid the week between Christmas and New Year unless you booked months ahead.

Weekend budget for two. $700 to $1,300 without downhill skiing. Add $250 to $400 if you ski.

Plan it. Go Stowe.

2. Lake Placid, New York

Partially frozen lake below snow-covered mountains in winter

A two-time Winter Olympics town wrapped around a frozen lake, with the High Peaks behind it.

About five hours from New York City, two from Montreal

Where to stay. A lakefront lodge or cabin on Mirror Lake, within walking distance of the village. Find a lakeside stay.

Do this. Skate on the Olympic Oval where the 1980 Games were held, then take the toboggan chute down onto the frozen lake.

Best timing. January and February, when the lake freezes solid.

Weekend budget for two. $600 to $1,100.

3. Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, New York

Victorian castle resort reflected in the lake below the Shawangunk Ridge, New York

Not a chalet, but it delivers the same thing: a Victorian castle above a frozen lake, with an outdoor skating pavilion and fires going in every room. The easiest escape on this list.

About 90 minutes from New York City

Where to stay. Mohonk Mountain House. Rates are all-inclusive, covering meals and activities, so the weekend costs what it costs with no surprises.

Do this. Skate at the open-air pavilion after dark, then walk the lake path in the snow.

Best timing. January and February. The holiday period books out furthest ahead.

Weekend budget for two. $900 to $1,600, meals included.

Rockies

4. Breckenridge, Colorado

Historic main street under fresh snow with shopfronts lit at dusk in Breckenridge, Colorado

A preserved Victorian mining town at the base of a major ski mountain, with a walkable Main Street that works even if you never click into a binding.

About 90 minutes from Denver

Where to stay. A slopeside condo or a cabin above town, both widely available. Compare Breckenridge cabins and condos on Booking.com.Browse options through GoBreck, the official tourism site.

Do this. Snowshoe a quiet trail in the morning, then the hot tub and Main Street in the evening.

Best timing. January for snow and lower rates, March for sun and spring skiing.

Weekend budget for two. $800 to $1,500, more with lift tickets.

Before you go. Breckenridge sits above 9,600 feet. Take the first evening slowly, drink more water than feels necessary, and do not plan a hard hike on day one.

5. Park City, Utah

Snow-covered main street with ski runs rising behind it in Park City, Utah

Three resorts, an Olympic park and a historic main street, all within 45 minutes of a major airport. The easiest ski weekend in the country to reach.

About 45 minutes from Salt Lake City

Where to stay. Old Town if you want to walk to dinner, or a mountainside chalet if you want the view. Compare Park City chalets on Booking.com.Browse through Visit Park City.

Do this. Ride the bobsled track at the Olympic Park, which is open to the public and a genuinely good story afterwards.

Best timing. January, or mid-March for longer days. Avoid the Sundance festival window unless you are going for it.

Weekend budget for two. $900 to $1,600.

6. Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Snow-covered Teton range rising above a winter valley in Wyoming

The Tetons rising straight off the valley floor, with elk on the flats and a town square built around antler arches. The most dramatic landscape on this list.

Fly in, or drive about five hours from Salt Lake City

Where to stay. A cabin in the valley or a lodge near the town square. Compare Jackson Hole cabins on Booking.com.Browse through Visit Jackson Hole.

Do this. A sleigh ride across the National Elk Refuge, where thousands of elk winter in the valley. It is the thing people remember.

Best timing. January and February for snow and wildlife.

Weekend budget for two. $1,000 to $1,800, the priciest here.

7. Whitefish, Montana

Frost-covered evergreen trees on a snowy mountain slope under a pale sky

A real mountain town rather than a resort development, 25 miles from Glacier National Park, with deep snow and a fraction of Colorado's crowds.

About 30 minutes from Kalispell

Where to stay. A log cabin outside town or a lodge near the mountain base. Find a Whitefish cabin.

Do this. The snow ghosts, trees frozen into white sculptures by wind and fog along the upper runs, are worth the lift ride even if you do not ski down.

Best timing. January through early March.

Weekend budget for two. $700 to $1,300.

8. Sun Valley, Idaho

Winter mountain resort with snow-covered trees and lodge buildings

America's first destination ski resort, and still one of the quietest for its quality. Sunny, dry snow and an outdoor pool that steams in subzero air.

About two and a half hours from Boise

Where to stay. The lodge itself for the history, or a condo in Ketchum a mile away for less. Find a Sun Valley stay.

Do this. The weekly ice show at the outdoor rink, where you watch world-class skaters from a seat with a blanket and a drink.

Best timing. January and February.

Weekend budget for two. $800 to $1,400.

West Coast

9. Leavenworth, Washington

Alpine village under snow with mountains rising behind it

A Bavarian-themed alpine village in the Cascades that goes all in on winter lights in December. The mountains around it carry the rest of the season.

About two and a half hours east of Seattle

Where to stay. Posthotel, an adults-only wellness hotel on the river modelled on Austrian spa hotels, with saltwater pools, saunas and steam rooms, and every room facing the water.

Do this. The outdoor pools at dusk while snow falls, which is the single best version of this entire fantasy.

Best timing. December for the village lights, January and February for quiet and snow.

Weekend budget for two. $800 to $1,400.

Before you go. The drive crosses a mountain pass. Check conditions before you leave and carry chains in a storm.

10. Big Bear Lake, California

Wooden cabin surrounded by snow-covered pine trees

Snow and A-frame cabins two hours from Los Angeles, which still surprises people who think of California as beaches.

About two hours from Los Angeles

Where to stay. An A-frame cabin with a wood stove and a hot tub, the local speciality. Find a Big Bear cabin.

Do this. Drive up midweek if you can. Weekend traffic on the mountain road is the only hard part of this trip.

Best timing. January and February, when natural snow is most reliable.

Weekend budget for two. $450 to $900, the most affordable here.

The winter weekend formula

Friday. Drive in daylight if the route crosses a pass. Groceries on the way, so Saturday morning does not start with an errand.

Saturday. One outdoor thing, whether that is skiing, snowshoeing or a sleigh ride. Then the hot tub, then a long dinner. Do not stack two activities.

Sunday. Slow breakfast, a short walk in the snow, and leave by early afternoon to stay ahead of the traffic coming down the mountain.

Pack layers rather than one heavy coat, bring swimwear even in January, and assume the cabin's kitchen is better stocked for breakfast than for dinner.

Prices are rough estimates for two people, covering lodging, food and fuel, and were accurate as of October 2026. Winter rates swing hard by date. Always check current pricing before booking.

Questions couples ask

How much does a winter chalet weekend cost for two?

Between $450 and $1,800 for lodging, food and fuel over three days. Big Bear Lake is the most affordable ($450 to $900) and Jackson Hole the most expensive ($1,000 to $1,800). Add $250 to $400 per person if you ski. Holiday weeks and February school breaks can roughly double rates.

When should you book a winter cabin?

Months ahead for Christmas, New Year and February school breaks, which sell out first and cost the most. Mid-January and early March still have snow, with lower rates and real availability. Hot-tub cabins go first in every region.

Which winter chalet getaway is closest to New York?

Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, about 90 minutes away, all-inclusive with a fire in every room ($900 to $1,600 for two). Lake Placid is about five hours, with skating on the 1980 Olympic Oval and a toboggan run onto frozen Mirror Lake.

Do you need to ski for a chalet weekend?

No. Half the places on the list are as good if you never leave the property: Mohonk, Big Bear, Leavenworth's adults-only Posthotel with its saltwater pools, and Sun Valley's steaming outdoor pool and weekly ice show. Skipping lift tickets saves $300 or more per person.

What is the best way to plan a three-day winter weekend?

Drive in daylight on Friday and buy groceries on the way. Do one outdoor activity on Saturday, then the hot tub and a long dinner. Have a slow breakfast and a short snow walk on Sunday, leaving by early afternoon to beat mountain traffic. Pack layers and swimwear.
